“Dog Dick” is a video diary-documentary sold as a film from 2013, which has been
described as morbid and offensive, as well as being accused of promoting abuse
against the elderly and animal torture.
Description.
Originally titled “White Trash Holocaust,” independent filmmaker James
Bell's experimental film consists of various home-made segments that show
the worst side of “the American people”. Uneducated farmers who get drunk,
use food stamps to buy cigarettes, gossip about dead people, coworkers, and
neighbors who try to make birds fly before they are physically capable. The
film closely follows several individuals as they go through the different
stages of their day. Some of these people appear to have some form of mental
disability.
Interwoven throughout the film are disgusting and unpleasant sequences, as
well as recordings of “abuse” of animals, most of which are dead. A deer
carcass is thrown away, dead cats and a mouse are crushed with a hammer, a
nest of caterpillars is set on fire, a woman tries to make a bird fly, among
others.
Unjustified controversy.
According to James Bell, his film in no way glorifies elder abuse or animal
torture, as he himself says... "This film contains no sexual content but it has scenes containing dead
animals. No animals were harmed for the making of this film. All the
actors were aware they were being filmed, sadly most have passed away."
