On January 15, 1947, Betty Bersinger was walking with her young daughter in the
Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, when she came across what
she thought was a mannequin lying on the side of the street in a vacant lot.
Bersinger was shocked and horrified when she realized that what they were
actually looking at was the horribly mutilated body of a woman.
