“Tontine Massacre: The Fiji Tapes” is a 2011 Mockumentary Horror film, written
and directed by Ezna Sands, about a survival reality show that went horribly
wrong. In addition to remaining in limbo without an official release until now,
it managed to convince many people that it was a true story.
Sinopsys.
With a runtime of 1 hour and 36 minutes, the plot follows 15 contestants on a
new reality show called “Tontine,” which premiered in June 2007. The
participants are sent to a deserted island in Fiji to compete for a $10
million prize. However, after a shipwreck, the competitive dynamic turns into
a violent struggle for survival, where the lines between reality and fiction
become blurred.
Unreleased.
It is known that the film went into production in 2010 and was completed in
2011. Although it was screened at a few film festivals, the film never
received a wide commercial release on home video or streaming platforms, which
led to doubts and theories about its actual existence, and it has even been
classified as Lost Media.
A real documentary?
Marketing campaign.
In the style of “The Blair Witch Project,” during production (2010–2011),
websites and social media profiles were created that treated the shipwreck in
Fiji as breaking news rather than a movie promotion, leading many to believe
it was a real documentary.
A True Survivor Legend.
Director Ezna Sands cast Rob Mariano (Boston Rob), a true Survivor legend,
which blurred the line between fiction and reality for American
audiences.
The canceled TV show.
In 2007–2008, there was a real-life reality show project called “Tontine.”
It was set to be the most expensive show in history, with a prize of $10
million. Contestant “Boston Rob” Mariano was actually involved. The show was
canceled before filming began due to budget and logistical issues in Fiji.
Ezna Sands took the premise of that failed show and the shipwreck storyline
to make a horror movie. She used the show’s name and its main characters to
make it seem as though “something went wrong” during the filming of the
original show.
2023 projection.
In March 2023, the film emerged from complete obscurity thanks to the
Unnamed Footage Festival (UFF) in San Francisco, where the full-length
version of the film was screened and a Q&A session with the producer was
held.
Those who have seen it confirmed that it is a real, completed film, not an
internet hoax, and that it works surprisingly well as a critique of
reality TV.
Future release?
Because the film was based on a real reality show that was canceled, the
original 2007 contracts did not provide for the use of the participants’
likenesses in a horror film, which creates a risk of massive lawsuits over
image rights.
With the emergence of figures like “Boston Rob” Mariano, the cost of
royalties and union-related complications (SAG-AFTRA) for widespread
distribution via streaming or Blu-ray are extremely high for an independent
production.
Due to the above, there is currently no scheduled release date for the film.
