On April 24, 1967, Vladimir Komarov, a Soviet test pilot and cosmonaut, was
returning to Earth after being selected as the pilot for the Soyuz 1 mission.
Unfortunately, a malfunction in his capsule’s parachute made him the first human
to die in spaceflight.
